Klimaweg Wien West

Klimaweg Wien West is a walking and cycling corridor from the Ringstrasse, through Neubau, Funfhaus and Ottakring to the pedestrian/cycling bridge over Flötzersteig. The path takes you through (mostly) traffic calmed streets, along parks and over tree-filled squares and paths.

The Klimaweg project will create a map of the corridor highlighting climate friendly infrastructure, like Kühle Meile Zieglergasse and pedestrian/cycling paths, climate friendly culture, and climate friendly businesses.

We premiered the project idea as part of the Vienna Janes Walk events celebrating the birthday of the magnificent city planning activist Jane Jacobs. We hope the Klimawalk will help people learn about how city planning and neigbourhood projects can help protect us from the impacts of climate change. We think it’s something Jane would approve of.

Why a Klimaweg?

Thinking about climate change is overwhelming. We’re bombarded daily with news about burning forests, flooding rivers and rising temperatures. Not to mention the geo-political and socio-economic problems caused our dependence on cheap fossil fuels such as war, pandemic, and human conflict.

It’s easy to lose hope, but, in fact, many communities are taking steps in the right direction, making cycling safer here, planting trees there, organising local circular economy businesses, baby steps yes, but a change in direction. The city of Vienna and neighbourhood organisations are doing great things, recognising them, seeing them, talking about them is the first step to regaining hope and inspiration – moving our city from tentative baby steps to the champion marathoner needed for building a better world.
