Citizen-Generated Data and Government

WayCount traffic counting sensor homepage – November 2014. Could citizen collected traffic data could be placed on a government Internet site?

A really important question about citizen collected data is how to it can be distributed and used by others. Of course people can just put their data on the Internet with an API feed, but that’s probably not the best way of making it usable. A group called Civicus.org has just released a report called “Citizen-Generated Data and Governments: Towards a Collaborative Model” that addresses these kinds of questions and proposes a model for having government host data collected and developed by citizens. It’s an interesting idea well worth thinking about. More from GovLab.
